Comfort & Durability Philosophy
Otis mattresses are engineered to be as comfortable as they are durable. The goal is to provide sofa-level comfort while maintaining flexibility and pressure relief for occasional or nightly sleeping.
Unlike cotton-based futons, Otis uses highly resilient high-density foam. Foam retains its shape and feel through repeated compression, while cotton batting becomes thinner and harder wherever it's regularly compressed, since its fibers have nothing to draw them back to their original position once weight is removed.
Do not judge a mattress by thickness alone. Interior material quality determines longevity, comfort, and long-term shape retention.
Important Notes on Thickness & Quality
Thickness can be misleading in the mattress industry. Many mattresses are rounded or overestimated for marketing purposes. Otis mattresses use true boxed edges, making thickness measurable and consistent.
More important than thickness is the quality of materials inside. High-density foam and resilient construction allow Otis mattresses to maintain their shape and comfort for 10–15 years.
Grip Strips Recommendation
Grip Strips are strongly recommended for high-performance futons to keep the mattress properly positioned and functioning as intended.
Cover & Thickness Guidelines
Standard futon covers are designed for 6" mattresses. Otis true 8" mattresses require a true 8" box-corner cover. Using an undersized cover will alter comfort and make folding more difficult.
The mattress is the most used component of any futon. Invest in quality materials that maintain comfort and structural integrity over time.
