Prairie Rugs are made using the highest grade of recycled, pre-consumer (New) cotton strips used in the manufacturing of bedding sheets. All of the cotton used is grown in India.
The cotton strips are washed multiple times and then dyed using low-impact organic dyes. They are then rinsed 3 times which removes the residual dye and helps to prevent color transfer. The source water comes from a well located at the manufacturing site. The residual dye water is then used to irrigate vegetables and mango trees that surround the manufacturing plant.
The strips are then sun dried and woven by hand on manual looms by artisans who are paid Fair Trade Wages. They are actually paid more than the prevailing wage, and are provided with healthcare for their families. They also receive an extra months wages during the Hindu Festival of Lights in October, (A policy I think should be started in the US).
No child labor is used. The workers, many of whom have been employed with us for over 15 years are provided a safe and pleasant working environment.
The warp thread, which makes the skeleton of the rugs is made of 100% cotton, and is extremely strong and of the same grade that is used to make hand-knotted Oriental rugs. They use 30% more warp thread than economy made rag rugs which ensures the tight weave and longevity of Prairie Rugs. This is what makes the rugs lie flat instead of curling up at the edges.
All of the rugs are cold water washable.
Each Rug is individually wrapped and shipped via UPS or FedEx, and arrives in about 2 weeks.
